Twice trying to test herding-instincts made us wanting to try a real herding-course.
It was held the 17th-18th of March at Anne Egede in Jægerspris, with Collin Seaburne as instructor.
The nine dogs on the team were six Border Collies, a dutch sheepdog, the Bouvier Pinot with Helle and Maise with Birte as shepherd.
It was an instructive, interesting, physically tough, muddy but also very funny experience.
It was great watching especially the Border Collies herd the sheep. But also the dutch sheepdog and Pinot did lots of progress during the weekend.
Maise only showed little instincts for herding with the sheep in the roundpen.
Maise did not show much instinct for herding while being in the small roundpen, where the sheep started to stay. It didn’t get much better in the large roundpen. Maise had a good time saying hello to the sheep!
But when she was out in the open field with the sheep a fire was lit.
She gathered the sheep – mostly in corners. But she was also able to find “the point of balance” – especially when Colllin or Anne were herding.
Even though Maise’s instinct for herding is not the strongest, and Birtes age and condition had a hard time fulfilling the tough job as a shepherd, it was a wonderfull experience.
So we are fresh to go on with the herding-business.
It got better with the sheep running free.
In the small roundpen, Maise is investigating the sheep.
On the second day her instincts were lit.
